Tormented Souls rescues classic RESI 2

The first thing I accidentally snapped into a twitch chat about Tormented Souls was: Some indie developer will soon get an Old School Resi Clone. This woke up with me only careful interest. On the one hand, I am a fan of the good old survival horror, on the other hand, many small teams at the original resident evil and silent Hill formula, but rarely successful. Tormented Souls, however, surprised me extremely positively.

Gameplay in front of history

Almost all horror games of this world have in common that they would like to provide us a tingling gruselate atmosphere, always somewhere between gloomy, mysterious and morbid. Apart from that, the genre is very wide. Some titles such as Layers of Fear are rather narrative experiences than fun gameplay experiences. The mechanics consist mainly of simple exploration and act as if they had been put on the story in retrospect.

At Tormented Souls I would tap that it was about the other way around: In the beginning, it was certainly the desire to return to the mechanics of the glorious survival horror era. The story acts as if she had not added. It is interchangeable for me and is likely to mount a great surprise for Horror's. The base: A young woman is alone and completely unprepared at night in a scary villa to find out more about a mysterious postcard.

However, the simple story works as a frame for what Tormented Souls shines: the gameplay.

Samara Summer @ Also_im_winter Samara's fascination for horror games germinated in the 90s, when monsters made of fist-sized pixels were still scary. When she had to assist a buddy at the early residence and silent hill parts, it was finally happened for her. Since then, the gamer has been pursuing the development of the genre and enthuses for AAA titles, but also has a heart for innovative and unusual indie games.

Much variety

The game consistently focuses on proven ingredients such as exploration, puzzles and struggles with limited ammunition, but also brings good ideas. The puzzles score with me because they require a large part of logic instead of the mere search for keys. In addition, they are so varied, that the puzzle makes fun. Interesting additions are also a mirror world and small time travel corresponding to the reality. Silent Hill fans are likely to be happy.

The most exciting component is for me, however, the combination of an amnesia-moderate dark mechanism with the struggles: Our heroine Caroline keeps it only a few moments in the darkness before she dies in fear. A lighter with endless flame creates remedy - but only for so long until we meet in a dark room on an opponent.

To do this with a weapon, Caroline needs both hands. Means: weapon and light at the same time does not work. First of all, we have to race with the lighter through the room, dodging the opponent and ignite candles before we can grab the weapon. This ensures beautiful thrills.

In general, the mutants created by human hands can make a lot with claw hands and hospital equipment a lot. The solid camera perspectives represent an additional challenge. But just that makes it very satisfying to do opponents and develop strategies for different types. Rand note: The provisional self-made-shotgun looks pretty cool - and of course also has neat wumms.

Anyway, I could hardly put the controller out of hand until after good eight hours the end credits ran. If you want to make a classic survival horror, I can clearly recommend this title. However, if you may become uncompromising the typical mechanics - Autosaves, different levels of difficulty or move you when targeting? Do not even think! Also in terms of accessibility is not much going on here.

For me, however, thanks to Tormented Souls stands: the good old survival horror is still fun in 2021 even if he comes with good ideas and not trying to simply copy a game. With a new game of the team or a DLC I would be the same.

Do you already play Tormented Souls or is it still on your wish list? Or does not this game offer the kind of horror that appeals to you?
